Telecom (telecommunications carriers) are the companies that own and operate the physical networks — mobile/cellular spectrum, fixed-line copper, fiber-optic cable, and the switching/core gear — over which voice, data, and connectivity flow. How it's used in practice

Telecom is most often used as an income and ballast holding rather than a growth bet. Carriers carry among the highest dividend yields in large-cap equity, and the steady billing makes the cash flow relatively recession-resilient (24/7 Wall St.). Investors and analysts typically watch the capex cycle as the swing factor: free cash flow (and dividend room) expands as a major build — 5G, then fiber — completes and capex intensity falls, which is the bull case that recurs at each cycle's tail end (Oliver Wyman). A related lever is infrastructure separation (spinning towers, fiber, or data centers into separately valued entities), which can re-rate integrated carriers because those assets command higher multiples standalone (TMT IB Guide). Adoption, debate & evidence

The "defensive dividend" framing is widely held and broadly supported by telecom's low beta and stable revenue. But the honest record is mixed. The #1 misuse is treating headline dividend yield as a quality signal — a yield far above peers usually prices in a coming cut or eroding fundamentals, not a bargain. Always cross-check yield against free-cash-flow coverage, net-debt/EBITDA, and the capex trajectory.
