That hardware is cyclical and structurally margin-pressured is consensus, not contested — it shows up in the persistent valuation discount of hardware versus software. The genuinely debated questions are: (1) which hardware names have a durable moat (ecosystem lock-in like Apple, switching costs like Cisco/Arista) versus which are price-takers, and (2) whether the AI buildout is a structural up-cycle or another boom destined to bust. When it fails: demand is durable-good and deferrable, so it collapses fast in downturns and when refresh cycles stretch. Component-cost spikes compress margins with a lag. Commoditization is relentless — today's premium category is tomorrow's price war.

The #1 analytical misuse: valuing a hardware maker like a software company. Treating one good product cycle (or AI-driven order surge) as a permanent growth rate — and paying a software multiple for it — is how investors get hurt when the cycle rolls over. Conversely, the inverse error is tarring a true ecosystem/services compounder (Apple) with the commodity-hardware discount. Distinguish the box-seller from the ecosystem.
