Medtech is not one industry but several with different economics:

Medtech is one of the most consistently held long-term healthcare allocations precisely because the installed-base model produces durable compounding — this is broadly accepted, not contested. The genuine debates are:
- Defensive or cyclical? The "healthcare is recession-proof" claim is only partly true for devices. Essential/acute device demand is sticky, but elective procedures and hospital capital equipment fall when consumers defer care or hospitals freeze budgets — vividly demonstrated when elective volumes collapsed during COVID lockdowns. Life-sciences tools proved cyclical too, suffering post-pandemic destocking as customers worked down inventory.
