Positive vs Negative Gamma
"Positive vs negative gamma" describes the two regimes of an options dealer's aggregate gamma exposure — the sensitivity of their net delta to moves in the underlying — and the opposite hedging behavior each produces. Because option dealers (market makers) hedge their books continuously and mechanically rather than for a view, the sign of their net gamma dictates whether their delta-rebalancing buys dips and sells rallies (positive gamma, which dampens price moves) or sells dips and buys rallies (negative gamma, which amplifies them). The core tension is that this is a powerful description of a real flow mechanic, but the inputs — which side of every contract the dealer is on — are not observable, so every "gamma regime" reading rests on an assumption that can be wrong.
How it's formed
Gamma (Γ) is the second derivative of an option's price with respect to the underlying — the rate of change of delta. A dealer who is long an option (call or put) is long gamma; a dealer short an option is short gamma. Aggregating across the dealer's whole book gives net gamma, usually expressed as dollar gamma (gamma × contract multiplier × spot² × open interest, per 1% move) and signed by the assumed dealer side.
The regime hinges on the standard dealer-positioning assumption: in index and ETF markets, end users tend to buy puts (hedging) and sell calls (overwriting/income), leaving dealers short puts and long calls — i.e. net long gamma. Crucially, the resulting hedge behavior depends on the gamma sign, not which option type is involved:
- Long (positive) gamma: as price rises the dealer's net delta grows, so to stay neutral they sell the underlying; as price falls delta shrinks, so they buy. Hedging leans against the move — counter-cyclical.
- Short (negative) gamma: delta moves with price faster than the hedge, so the dealer must buy as price rises and sell as it falls — pro-cyclical, chasing the move.
The boundary between regimes is the gamma flip (or "zero-gamma") level — the spot price at which aggregate dealer gamma crosses zero. Above it the book is typically net positive gamma; below it, net negative. The flip level moves with strike concentration, expiry, and spot. How it's used in practice
Practitioners use the gamma sign as a volatility-regime filter, not a directional signal:
- Positive-gamma regime → expect mean reversion and compression. Dealer hedging absorbs order flow: intraday dips get bought, rallies get faded, realized volatility stays low, and price tends to "pin" toward large strikes near expiry. Range-trading and premium-selling tactics are favored; breakout attempts often fail.
- Negative-gamma regime → expect trend, expansion, and tail risk. Hedging adds fuel in the direction of the move, so sell-offs accelerate, rallies can melt up, and one-way trend days and gap continuations become more likely. This is the textbook setup for "gamma-driven" cascades. Traders widen stops, respect momentum, and treat the zero-gamma flip as a level where behavior changes character.
- The flip level as a reference price. Many desks watch spot relative to estimated zero-gamma the way chartists watch a moving average: a market trading below its flip is in the "unstable" zone.
The framework is most coherent for broad index/ETF underlyings (SPX, SPY, QQQ), where the put-buy/call-sell user pattern is strongest and dealer hedging is a meaningful share of volume.
Standing & evidence
The mechanism is well grounded; the tradability of vendor GEX numbers is more contested.
- Academic support for the sign effect exists. Baltussen, Da, Lammers & Martens (Journal of Financial Economics, 2021, "Hedging Demand and Market Intraday Momentum") document strong intraday momentum across 60+ global futures (1974–2020) and link it to gamma-hedging demand: when dealer net gamma is negative, hedging is pro-cyclical and the last-30-minutes return is more strongly predicted by the day's prior return — i.e. negative gamma amplifies moves. They also find single stocks with more negative net gamma show more intraday momentum. A separate strand (e.g. "Gamma Positioning and Market Quality," Journal of Economic Dynamics & Control, 2024) finds dealer gamma positioning affects realized volatility and return autocorrelation in the predicted direction.
- The key caveat is the unobservable dealer side. Public option chains never reveal, contract by contract, whether the dealer is long or short. Every GEX provider assumes a positioning rule (typically calls-positive / puts-negative). As multiple vendor explainers note, two platforms can both "compute GEX" and still disagree on sign and flip level because their assumptions differ. The assumption holds best in aggregate index markets and breaks down where end-user flow is unusual — notably single-name options dominated by a few institutional positions, or names where retail aggressively buys calls (which flips the dealer to long puts/short calls relative to the standard model).
- 0DTE complication. The explosion of zero-days-to-expiry index options has made same-day gamma far more dynamic; a CBOE-published study (Vasquez, Amaya, Pearson & Garcia-Ares, "0DTE Index Options and Market Volatility: How Large is Their Impact?") finds their net market-volatility impact is smaller than popular "gamma squeeze" narratives claim — they estimate the maximum effect of market-maker gamma hedging on annualized 30-minute volatility at roughly 6 percentage points, and find no rise in gap-move frequency since 0DTE proliferation — because dealer 0DTE positioning is more balanced than assumed.
Bottom line: positive/negative gamma is a real and evidenced flow mechanic at the index level, but published GEX levels are model estimates, not measured positioning.
Strengths & limitations
Strengths. Describes a genuinely mechanical, non-discretionary flow that can dominate short-term price action; gives a falsifiable regime read (compression vs expansion); academically supported at the index level; useful for risk framing (volatility regime) even when not used to trade.
Limitations. (1) The dealer-side assumption is unverifiable and can be wrong, especially for single names. (2) It is a volatility/behavior indicator, not a directional one — it says how moves propagate, not which way. (3) Flip levels and GEX magnitudes vary by vendor and methodology. (4) Effects are strongest near major expiries and in liquid index products; weakest in idiosyncratic single-stock flow. The single most common misuse is treating a negative-gamma reading as a directional sell signal (or positive gamma as "bullish"); the sign predicts amplification vs dampening, not direction. A second frequent error is applying index-grade confidence to a single-stock GEX print.
System relevance

Hard caveat to propagate downstream: any GEX-derived regime label is an assumption-dependent estimate, and its reliability degrades sharply for single names versus broad index/ETF underlyings.
