Chasing Entries
"Chasing entries" is the act of buying (or shorting) a market because it is already moving fast in that direction rather than because a planned setup has triggered at a defined price with defined risk. The entry is reactive: price ran away from where you would have bought, the move "feels" like it's leaving without you, and you click in late — typically after the stock is already extended several percent from its base or its trigger level. The core tension is that the very thing that makes a chase tempting — visible, accelerating momentum — is also what makes it a poor entry: you are paying a worse price for the same trade, which mechanically widens your stop, shrinks your reward-to-risk, and (the evidence suggests) often buys you near a short-term local high. It is the entry-side expression of FOMO and is distinct from a legitimate momentum or breakout entry, which is defined in advance and taken at a planned level — not chased after the fact.
The behavioral drivers
- Regret/anticipated-regret aversion. Behavioral work going back to Kahneman & Tversky and to regret theory holds that the pain of a foregone gain ("I watched it run and did nothing") is felt acutely — comparable in salience to a realized loss. Chasing is the act of buying relief from that anticipated regret. It is the same emotional architecture (reacting to what already happened, not to a plan) that, on the exit side, makes traders hold losers and cut winners.
- Attention-driven buying. Barber & Odean's All That Glitters (2008) documents that individual investors are net buyers of "attention-grabbing" stocks — those in the news, with extreme one-day returns, or with abnormally high volume — whereas they do not show the same attention bias when selling (they tend to sell only what they already own). A fast-moving, headline name is, by construction, exactly the stock most likely to be on a screen — so the move itself manufactures the attention that pulls in the chase.
- Herding / social proof. A visibly accelerating move signals "others know something," and the fear of being the one left out drives conformity-based entry rather than independent analysis.
- Overconfidence after a streak. A recent win lowers the threshold for "good enough," making an unplanned, late entry feel justified.
How it shows up in practice
The recognizable signatures of a chase, versus a planned entry:
- Buying after the trigger has passed — e.g. the breakout level was $50, you saw it at $50 but hesitated, and you click in at $54.
- Buying with no defined risk — there is no logical stop nearby, so the stop is either arbitrary (a fixed dollar amount) or absurdly wide (back at the base), which silently shrinks reward-to-risk.
- Entry justified by the speed of the move ("look how fast it's going") rather than by a setup, level, or confirmation.
- Entering several bars into an extended, un-pulled-back run.
A widely repeated practitioner heuristic is to refuse a new entry once price has run a number of bars in one direction with no pullback (some traders use a rule of thumb like "don't enter on the current bar after ~5 straight bars without a consolidation"). The specific number is folklore, not a measured constant — but the underlying principle, wait for a pullback or consolidation rather than buying into vertical extension, is sound and reduces late-cycle entries.
Adoption, debate & evidence
That chasing is common is well established — attention-driven buying is one of the most replicated findings in retail-investor behavior (Barber & Odean 2008, Review of Financial Studies). The harder question is whether it actually costs money, and here the evidence is suggestive rather than a clean experiment isolating "the chase":
- Active trading underperforms. Barber & Odean's Trading Is Hazardous to Your Wealth (2000) found that across 66,465 discount-brokerage households (1991–1996), the most active traders earned ~11.4% annually while the market returned ~17.9% — a gap of roughly 6.5 percentage points, attributed largely to overconfident, overactive trading. Chasing is one engine of that overactivity, though the study measures turnover, not chasing per se.
- Extreme-return / high-attention stocks tend to revert short-term. Short-term-reversal literature (e.g. investor-attention-and-reversal studies in the Journal of Financial Economics) finds that stocks with extreme recent moves and heavy individual-investor buying tend to underperform subsequently — consistent with the chaser buying near a local high. Magnitudes vary by study and sample; treat the direction as robust and any single percentage as study-specific.
- The honest gap: these establish that buying extended, attention-grabbing names and trading actively are costly on average. No clean academic study isolates the click-in-late chase from a planned momentum entry. The strong "FOMO trades have negative expectancy" claims common in trading-education content are usually drawn from individuals' own journals, not peer-reviewed data — directionally plausible, but self-reported and unaudited. Cite them as practitioner observation, not established fact.
Strengths & limitations
There is no genuine "strength" to chasing — it is by definition the degraded version of an entry. But the nuance worth preserving: momentum itself is real. The academic momentum factor (Jegadeesh–Titman) and disciplined breakout systems both buy strength deliberately, at planned levels, with defined risk. The problem is not "buying a rising stock"; it is buying it reactively, late, and without defined risk. The #1 misuse is conflating the two — using momentum's legitimacy to excuse an undefined, extended, emotion-driven entry. The mechanical damage is always the same: a worse fill widens the stop, which shrinks reward-to-risk and forces either an oversized loss or a too-tight stop that gets shaken out by noise.
The fix that practitioners and the evidence both support: pre-define the entry, the level, and the stop before the move happens, and if price has already run past your level, let it go and wait for the next setup or a pullback — there is always another trade. A trade journal that explicitly tags chased entries is the standard tool for surfacing their true cost in your own data.
